Dr. Phyllis Whitehead PhD, APRN, ACHPN, PMGT-BC, FNAP has been selected as one of 225 distinguished nurse leaders by the American Academy of Nursing with the distinction of "Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing". Despite COVID limitations two 7SICU nurses Becky Dampeer CTL, RN, BSN, CCRN, CFRN, and Katie Hayes, Preceptor, BSN, RN IV, CCRN were accepted to present their poster presentation for the 2021 Inova Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice Symposium. Becky's presentation is on Implementing Healthy Work Environment Strategies and Katie Hayes's presentation is on Time is of the Essence: Decreasing Unplanned Extubations in Critical Care.

I wanted to commend Matt Davis in facility maintenance. Late afterhours on Friday, the daughter of a patient had driven all the way back to Roanoke from Martinsville because she had left her father's pre-surgical supplies at 2001 Crystal Springs. Matt assisted her in locating the supplies and she was able to avoid a return trip the following Monday. 

Aimee Wooldridge RN IV with the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Carilion Children's led an initiative to augment education for caregivers of medically complex infants and children with new tracheostomies and studied the outcomes of this work. The Family Tracheostomy Program complements traditional bedside training with a phased process of simulation, resulting in significant improvements in caregiver skills and scenario performance, reduced anxiety, and fewer tracheostomy changes for the patient due to caregivers' competence after learning in a simulated environment.

Just wanted to say something about Jeff Burke, Environmental Services, he is always pleasant and always professional. I truly appreciate him. He takes pride in what he does and it shows. I just wanted to give him the recognition he deserves.

Dr. Denison got great feedback from a patient and her family members. They verbalized their appreciation that Dr. Denison took the time to explain what was going on with our complicated ICU patient and how much they felt heard and validated, and they said multiple times that "She is the best doctor we've ever met." Dr. Denison always has a great attitude while at work, and is very approachable and loves to teach.

Infection Control would like to congratulate Dining Services and the Sleep Center as the winners of May's CRBH Hand Hygiene competition for inpatient units.  Staff on these units completed the most hand hygiene observations of any CRBH inpatient units during the month of May and also had outstanding compliance. They received a certificate to display for their achievements. Congratulations to both Dining Services and the Sleep Center and thanks for all you do to keep our patients healthy and safe!
