It has been a hard month for our Carilion family.

We have been faced with the tragic loss of five of our colleagues due to illness in just the last four weeks. The recent deaths of our dedicated and precious colleagues come as we enter our 20th month of this pandemic. The losses that you, your teams and your families have felt during this time hurt.  We have a shared grief from which we will surely recover, but we acknowledge these nearly two years and unfathomable pain have taken a toil we will never forget.

After the first wave of COVID-19, many people thought it was over—we know better than most that it still isn't over. 

As a health care employee, you may sometimes get requests for advice or treatment from family and friends.

Treatment of yourself, your coworkers or your family members poses a number of risks and ethical questions. We now have a Self, Peer, Family Member Treatment and Urgent/Emergency Treatment policy that clarifies how we should handle these requests.

After a head-on car collision left Nikki with critical injuries, she was taken to CRMH, where she spent more than a month wondering if she’d ever walk again.

A team of our Orthopaedic and plastic and reconstructive surgeons was able to save her foot, but that was only the beginning of her journey!

Recently, we have received reports of scammers claiming to be from the Virginia Board of Nursing contacting our employees.

In one instance, an employee received a fax with a fake "suspension of license" letter. In another, the employee received a call saying that "fraudulent activity was found on your nurse practitioner license." The scammer asked for personal bank account information; when the employee refused, the caller said the employee would be arrested.

Isaiah Johnson, M.D., will serve as interim chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine while we conduct the search for a new chair.

It's almost time! 

Carilion Children's practices will be moving into the new Tanglewood facility over the next few weeks, weekend appointments will be available beginning Sept. 18, and the building will be fully operational for patients on Oct. 4.
