Other health care organizations have reported that some external IT vendors have requested access to patient data by using aggressive language.

If you receive any unexpected requests for access to patient data from an external vendor, please forward those requests to the HIM Release of Information (ROI) Triage team at HIM_ROI_Triage_Team@carilionclinic.org.

The team will review, evaluate and respond to those requests if they determine a response is needed.

We have seen a resurgence of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-related phone scams. Callers use fake names and badge numbers but may also use the names of well-known DEA officials. Sometimes, scammers will spoof legitimate DEA phone numbers.

Whether during a child’s outpatient visit or a hospital stay, our child life specialists help patients and families with coping strategies through play, self-expressive activities, age-appropriate medical preparation and education. Each of these are intentionally designed to help both the child and family gain a better understanding of medical procedures, reducing their stress and fear of the unknown during a difficult time.

Research studies usually focus on a specific way to advance care and find better treatment, but it takes many different teams to make the research successful.

SOAR (Seeking Opportunities, Aspirations and Results) is our nurse extern program. Selected nursing students attend our extern academy and professional development sessions in summer or winter and receive didactic and skills training that build their competencies as caregivers in the hospital setting. They work alongside nurses and get real-life experience caring for patients.
