Frank Bayes Wolfe worked summers in the coal mines of West Virginia as he completed his medical training at the University of Virginia around 1940. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army 110 Station Hospital at Camp Pickett, Virginia, where he met Franklin County native Dr. Henry Lee.

In 1971, patient utilization declined at Radford Community Hospital (RCH) for the first time, largely because of the opening of Montgomery Regional Hospital.
Though RCH converted one floor of a wing that previously contained 38 beds into office, administrative and storage space, they nonetheless took on a $3.5 million expansion program in 1974 to create a modern hospital.
