Building Resilience in Tough Times
Meet Christina, an R.N. on a critical care unit. She’s just come home from her shift and bypasses her husband and kids to shower. Because she’s exhausted and wants to keep her family safe, she keeps her distance from them. As a distraction, she turns on the TV—but news of the day’s events overwhelms her.
Christina may be made up for this example, but she shares the same experiences, concerns and feelings that many people have. The pandemic has changed life and put our coping skills to the test, requiring a level of resilience that maybe we haven’t needed before.
The good news is that resilience can be learned, and new classes are available to help!
Our Education and Organizational Development and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) teams have worked together to offer Building Resilience, a course taught by EAP that provides practical tips for strengthening resilience in times of stress.
What Is Resilience?
Resilience is our ability to adapt and bounce back during stressful times and when things don't go as planned. Think of resilience as a superpower—but it needs to be nurtured, strengthened and enhanced.
“Our ability to stretch and recover is as normal a part of life as pain and suffering,” says Neely Conner, manager of EAP and an instructor for the web-based course. “Simply recognizing this can eliminate a power struggle and create greater acceptance for any given situation.”
As humans, we are wired to make sense of what happens in our worlds, although it isn’t always easy. How we re-focus can bring greater clarity, self-sustainment and even an ability to thrive.
Building Resilience is an interactive class that teaches you how to refocus by using existing skills, learning new ones and connecting with others. You'll also receive helpful resources to use in the future. The 45-minute training will be offered at multiple times over the next several months.
