After 13 years of service with Carilion, Mike Dame, vice president of Marketing and Communications (MarCom), will be leaving our team effective Jan. 30, 2022. He is relocating to Gainesville, Florida, to be closer to family and support his aging parents.

During the most recent COVID-19 surge in Virginia, we admitted some of our highest numbers of acutely ill COVID-19 patients yet—most of whom were unvaccinated. To reduce the number of admissions and stress on our staff, we used a monoclonal antibody treatment, which played a critical role in serious combating illness in those who were most vulnerable.

Alicia McAllister, a senior director in pediatrics, lost her husband Alva Daniels to suicide this summer. He was a dedicated respiratory therapist, and like many, the frontline became his every day. During the past week, two new cyber threats emerged - the "Log4j/Log4Shell" vulnerability that cybercriminals are using to access some organizations' computer systems and the UKG/Kronos ransomware attack.
Our computer systems were not adversely impacted by these events. We continue to monitor cyberthreats, and we urge everyone to remain vigilant when clicking on links or opening attachments. Health care organizations remain a top target for cybercriminals and phishing is a primary way to carry out these attacks.
