Today, leaders, donors and cancer survivors broke ground on the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, marking the beginning of construction on the six-story building on the Virginia Tech Carilion Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke.

The building will replace our 41-year-old cancer facility on South Jefferson Street and accommodate the increasing number of cancer patients in our region as well as expand treatment options, research and support services.

In 2018, Mike Goforth, Virginia Tech associate athletics director and head trainer, experienced a series of alarming health events that led him to get a CT scan. Neurosurgeon Dr. Cara Rogers discovered the cause: a brain tumor.

Dr. Mark H. Greenawald will serve as the interim chair of the department of Family and Community Medicine. He will step in after Dr. Michael Jeremiah retires on Dec. 27 and will remain in the role until a permanent replacement is hired.

Daylight saving time begins in the spring, when you set your clocks ahead one hour. It ends in the fall, when you set your clocks back one hour to standard time. Daylight time begins on the second Sunday of March each year and ends on the first Sunday of November.

Due to the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, the Riverside surface parking lot next to Riverside 3 will be temporarily closed. 

The temporary closure will take place Monday, Oct. 28, through Saturday, Nov. 2.  During the temporary closure, the Riverside Parking Garage will remain open for parking. The surface parking lot will be reopened on Sunday, Nov. 3.
