We may all take for granted heat flowing from the vents on a cold winter day or running water to wash our hands.  But in a hospital - the continual oversight and repair of infrastructure in our facilities is critical to ensure the successful repairs and improvements to our patients!   Please take a moment to appreciate the doctors of the buildings - your Engineering & Maintenance staff and Facility leadership.  These men and women courageously go where no one really likes to go ho ho ho!  Cheers to E&M and to All a Safe Day and Night! 

Sometimes completing a SafeWatch reports can take courage and might seem like more work. Arman has found the importance of completing those reports, with his reporting the CAPS team is able to help find solutions to processes so we can provide safe quality care to our patients.

Nurses see things that others can't and it is important to highlight events and near misses to help our culture of safety.

The anticoagulation clinic has been very creative in coming up with new ways to provide excellent patient care during the COVID crisis.

Many anticoagulation patients, who were taking Warfarin/Coumadin, were very anxious about coming into the clinic during the beginning of the COVID crisis. These patients must come in every 2-4 weeks to have their INR checked to make sure they are on the correct dose of Warfarin/Coumadin.

Heartfelt kudos to transporter Jenna Falls! Her concern and great assessment skills helped to prevent an adverse event. When she brought a patient down to dialysis she voiced her concern with how the patient was breathing. The patient was in need of intervention and thanks to Jenna she received the care she needed quickly, before the problem escalated. You rock Jenna! 

Thanks Sam for advocating for our patient to receive the right treatment. I was very amazed when you educated the resident about the policy in such a professional way and made sure the patient received the right care. Keep up the great work!

ADC-A bag will now have barcodes, which is a big thanks to Robyne Lorek from Pharmacy. The ISMP used a write-up submitted by Robyne explaining mix-ups between ACD-A and Anticoagulant Sodium Citrate bags, published in a SAFETY brief June 5, 2014 to encourage the company to add barcodes to their products.  The ISMP reported on 11/8/2020 barcodes are finally going to happen. Way to go Robyne in getting this med safety initiative rolling!!!!!!

I would like to give a shout out to Miss Angela (Angie) Isley for her dedication, courage and commitment to care of our patients in Carilion. During my work in the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatric Services of CRMH, Miss Isley would bravely go everyday into the rooms of COVID-19 patients and help us in comprehensively evaluating patients thru video conferencing by Ipad. She would also take the efforts to gather collateral information on these patients from other nursing staff in the unit.

Emergency Services & Emergency Medicine would like to recognize all of our emergency department nurses!  Thank you for your unending commitment, dedication, and skillful expertise in emergency care.  Pediatrics, Trauma, Cardiac, Medical, Neurology, Forensics, OB GYN, critical care, behavioral health....You do it all.  Thank you and happy emergency nurses week!
