The Anticoagulation Clinic

The anticoagulation clinic has been very creative in coming up with new ways to provide excellent patient care during the COVID crisis.

Many anticoagulation patients, who were taking Warfarin/Coumadin, were very anxious about coming into the clinic during the beginning of the COVID crisis. These patients must come in every 2-4 weeks to have their INR checked to make sure they are on the correct dose of Warfarin/Coumadin.

The anticoagulation team came up with an idea of offering curbside service. The patient would drive up in front of the building and call the receptionist to let her know they had arrived. The nurse would put on PPE and take a cart out with the needed supplies and check the patient's INR with a fingerstick while the patient stayed in their car.

The team provided excellent patient care by providing this curbside service which kept the patient from going to the emergency room or having any life threatening issues.

The anticoagulation team collaborated with infection control to make sure the guidelines were maintained and were committed to providing the best patient care. The team also had courage to try something new that had not been provided in the past.

Congragulations to the anti coagulation team for a great WOW story and contributing to Carilion Clinics mission, which is to improve the health of the communities we serve.
