The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice (EBP) in Nursing and Healthcare in The Ohio State University College of Nursing is proud to announce the 2022-2023 cohort of its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Postdoctoral Fellowship.

After a highly competitive application and review process, nine individuals were chosen for the second cohort, representing nursing leadership, clinical practice and academia.

Trista Mitchell from the Virtual Care Center saw a HR on 10MPCU in the 30’s. Trista was unable to get through to the unit due to a high volume of phone calls at that time. She was concerned and decided to go with her intuition and called the red phone. I happened to be at the desk answering phones and picked up the red phone. She told me a patients HR was in the 30’s. I saw right away on the monitor that the patient was in sinus bradycardia. The nurse was just headed to the room for something else so I informed him of the low HR.

Congratulations to Dr. Bonnie Hennig-Trestman who recently won a bronze medal at the 2022 Summer Nationals Fencing Tournament in Minneapolis, MN.  

In addition, this placement qualifies her for the 2022 World Veteran Fencing Championship Team to compete in the Women's 50 Foil category. The tournament will take place in Zadar, Croatia this fall.  

This will be Dr. Hennig-Trestman’s third time competing in the World Veteran Fencing Championship. She previously competed in Limoges, France, 2015, and Cairo, Egypt, 2019.

A routine grocery shopping trip to the Rocky Mount Food Lion on December 21, 2021 by Shannika Hubbard turned out to be a bit more exciting than she expected. Shannika, the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Anesthesia Technician Supervisor, came around the corner of an aisle and found an unresponsive man on the floor with his children beside him. The man, a Rocky Mount police officer, was turning blue. Shannika quickly sprung into action, performing CPR on the man until the rescue squad arrived. Another woman helped by reassuring his children.

Congratulations to Alicia McAllister-Daniels, Senior Director in Carilion Childrens, for receiving a 2022 Medical Hero award from the American Red Cross. Alicia won this award for her work to bring awareness to the mental health needs of healthcare workers. Alicia does this work in honor of her late husband, Alva Daniels, a dedicated respiratory therapist who took his life last year.

Congratulations, Alicia, and thank you for bravely sharing your story and raising awareness about this important topic. You’re a hero to all of us at Carilion!  

  On Monday, April 11th 2022, as Carilion Police Officer Eric Smtih was headed to work at RMH, he came across a bad accident on US 460 in Bedford County.  As he approached, he knew that quick action was needed as the accident had just happened and several bystanders had stopped to see if they could render aid.  No law enforcement or rescue personnel were on scene at that time and a large diesel spill had accumulated under the truck making the situation dire and unstable as the driver was pinned in the truck.  Quickly, Officer Smith jumped into action, directing the commu

Dear Barry from maintenance, without your expertise, knowledge and crowbar; I would still be trapped in the supply closet in the Pediatric Emergency Room. Upon entering this supply closet with a fellow coworker, Paula, the door shut and would not open again. I quickly believed this inability to reopen represented a fate I did not want to accept. My time locked in the supply closet has changed me.

The moment Barry opened the door, is a moment that will forever be imprinted in my mind.
