The July Bee Award winner is Resource Pool POA Jamie Wray!  Below is the nomination that was submitted that earned Jamie her award.  Congratulations and thank you for your hard work Jamie!

On August 9th, members of Carilion’s Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) gathered together to officially dedicate the new Cath Lab 1 procedural suite to Dr. Gary Swank’s memory. The Cath Lab Team put together an impromptu dedication ceremony, which included the unveiling of a plaque on the wall next to the room. Members of CVI – Wendy Quarles, RN CVT III, Dr. Eric Williams and Dr. Tracey Criss each said a few words in appreciation of Dr. Swank’s dedication to excellence, collegial spirit and compassion for his patients, which led to the creation of Cath Lab 1 itself. Dr.

There were two patients in need of IVs that were hard sticks. Todd Distefano came up from the emergency department with the ultrasound and got an IV for each patient. This process was not quick and easy, he advocated for the patients making sure that they were given medications to help alleviate the pain and he was extremely patient in waiting for all of this to take place. He exemplifies advocacy and compassion for patients. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help us!

Amber deserves to be recognized for her kind, compassionate act of taking one of our ventilated ICU patient's outside. The patient has been on our unit for an extended amount of time due to many factors. Over the patient's extended stay, the nurses on our unit have seen the patient's spirit deteriorate quickly. Amber arranged to take the patient outside with another nurse and the respiratory therapist. Not only did Amber take the patient outside, but she did so in between a CT and endoscopy trip.

At New River Valley Medical Center Emergency Department, a frequent patient who is homeless, came to the ED for a laceration this past Sunday morning. Dr. Keel Coleman was the ED physician on duty that morning. We are all fond of this aging homeless gentleman and he is always kind and good spirited. Dr. Coleman went to the cafeteria and bought this patient a hearty breakfast for him to have, knowing that it was probably the first hot meal he has had in quite some time. This patient was extremely grateful to Dr. Coleman as was all of the staff. 

     With the Operating Room pediatrics population increasing the staff of the OR soon realized that they needed to incorporate a kid friendly space in the Outpatient Department. Three of the nurses Whitney Ashley, Heather Hopkins, and Brittany Lessard jumped in to take the lead on the project with help and input from the whole department. Everyone voted on different design aspects and it came together perfectly. The theme of the room is an Ocean Adventure with things like a treasure chest for the kids to pick a prize.

Nurses at North Roanoke Family Practice Kim Reburn and Rosie Hunter went beyond nursing to help a patient who's car was overheating.  They scrounged around and found a jug and got some water to put in a patients car, patient was very thankful for their help.   Outstanding compassion for patient!

Just wanted to drop a line to say thank you to Kristen Godsey BSN from 10 South/Oncology, myself, our staff,my patient all would like you to know that your help and expertise was much appreciated. I know that this is a busy place to be and you took time to help us!

Our Schwartz Center Rounds is being highlighted at the upcoming Corman IMPACT Honors Recognition Dinner in Boston, September 8th. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital began the Schwartz Center Rounds program in 2013 with the aim of mitigating moral distress and fostering moral resilience.

Please join us for the next Schwartz Center Rounds September 25th at noon in the 6th Floor Auditorium when we will be discussing the topic, "Honoring Our Patients' Right to Refuse Care."

With a big heart and no hesitation, Tressa Floyd came to the rescue of someone very much in need of medical help. She asked security to go get a wheelchair because the man needed to go to the Emergency Room. He was very sick and had made his way up to the door and Tressa brought him inside to get help for him. Even though the man was sick, I could tell that he was very grateful for Tressa taking the time to get him where he needed to be in order to get help. Thanks Tressa for having a big heart.
