Carl Cline, CFMH VP, provides head injury education to our construction crew, Skanska, working on our new OR project. They are required to have monthly education through their employer and Carl stepped up and volunteered.
This past weekend, our NICU families had the opportunity to take part in spooky season by dressing up our tiniest patients for Halloween. Thanks to Carilion Children’s Parent Advisory Board for hosting an event to create the costumes, families were able to choose from 55 creations. From superheroes to bacon and eggs, each NICU family was invited to participate.
Thank you to Radford University’s Global and Local Outreach and Education club who hosted a 3.1 Color Walk/Run earlier in October. In an effort to end addiction stigma, nearly 150 students and community members were showered in colored powder as they moved through the race. The donations totaling $1,100 will help Carilion’s Peer Recovery Center to support our patients throughout their recovery journey.
Carilion has some creative minds! This week several units participated in a Pumpkin Decorating Contest with pumpkins displayed in the cafeteria! Staff and visitors loved seeing a wide range of decorated pumpkins, from Oscar the Grouch to "PTO Patricia". Who will win 1st place?
Carilion Clinic has partnered with Roanoke County's Burton Center for Arts & Technology to offer Roanoke County Public School high school Juniors and Seniors a Radiologic Technologist - Limited program. This 2-year program will academically prepare students to take the ARRT Limited Scope of Practice in Radiology exam.
While visiting with a patient on the unit, Chaplain Seth McCormick noticed a change in the patient's condition and alerted the nurse. In the midst of the interventions that occurred, Seth remained with the patient, the family and the team to provide a calming, supportive presence. Seth, thank you for all you do for our patients and our teams.

On October the 7th, a collaboration of about 20 staff members conducted a Mock Code Blue on the Mobile MRI unit at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital. This event took place after judicious planning and forethought by all. An initial Mock Code Blue was ran several weeks before and evaluated for opportunities for improvement. Changes were made to the policy and education was provided hospital wide on the magnet safety and proper response to an emergency on the Mobile MRI unit.
