Earlier this month, infection preventionists, infectious disease pharmacists, and infectious diseases physicians came together to pack symptom relief packs for Carilion’s outpatient clinics. Designed for patients with upper respiratory symptoms who do not require antibiotics, these age-based packs contain things like tissues, lozenges, nasal saline, and chest rub. They are part of Carilion’s commitment to helping our patients feel better as quickly as possible this cold and flu season.
Carilion's Supply Chain Team and the Simulation Lab Director Nate Jones collaborate to begin planning out supply chain operations for Crystal Springs Tower. The Team learned how the Sim Lab can set up mock rooms for them so that when it is time occupy the new space, supply rooms be efficiently brought online so that our clinical teams can maintain continuity of care for our patients.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, Community Health and Outreach hosted a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration at Morningside Urban Farm. The event drew on Mexican traditions and the power of art to promote healing, build connection and celebrate diversity. Community members left mementos along the farm fence to honor lost loved ones and a beautiful ofrenda (or altar) was created by local Mexican artist Zuheil Álvarez Cortes with assistance from Roanoke City artist-in-residence Brian Counihan.
On Saturday, November 2nd, a very high risk OB/cardiac patient arrived at CNRV that was scheduled to deliver on Wednesday at VCU. The patient came in laboring and Dr. Tanner Hurley, OB/GYN, consulted VCU, CRMH, UVA, and Lewis Gale Salem to arrange for her transfer to a higher level of care. Unfortunately CRMH was at OB capacity, Lewis Gale Salem did not accept the patient since she was so high risk, and there were delays in the accepting OB & Cardiology physicians from VCU.

Last week (10/27/2024-11/2/2024), Carilion Mental Health held pumpkin contests, a department-side spirit week (designated theme for each day of the week to dress up), and an Autumn Fest potluck at each location. Thank you to everyone that participated!
For our 2024 Pumpkin Contest, we received over 20 amazing pumpkins. Everyone did a great job and we want to thank all who participated and took time to vote. If you didn't have a chance to see them while they were displayed last week, photos of all the pumpkins have been included in this post.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has lots to celebrate lately! Hospital acquired infections are the primary cause of preventable death among hospitalized patients. The PICU team has followed best practices with such consistency that they have reached not one, but two milestones that once were thought to be impossible.
As of October, they are celebrating ZERO Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) for FIVE years!
