I'd like to commend our nurses for catching a medication running at the wrong rate during bedside report. Bobby Payne and Kayla Wade identified a medication running incorrectly while they were giving bedside report at shift change. The patient had arrived to the unit not long before shift change and was very unstable. Lots of people were lending the nurse a hand to help stabilize her patient. During shift report the two nurses rate verified all meds running and found the error, fixing it immediately.

Carilion Dining & Nutrition Services is excited to announce a new Virginia Tech Carilion venture. We are partnering with the Virginia Tech Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise (HNFE) to issue a Master of Science Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics to prepare graduates to become Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs).

Sonya and Mary from the Cardiac Cath Lab would like to give a Big Thank You to Deon Webb from EVS !  We were having trouble getting someone to come to refill our paper towels. When Sonya passed him in the hall she told him our issue, he came right away and fixed us up!

The staff at CSJH would like to recognize and congratulate CSJH ICU nurse Paige Perkins, RN for being selected as a winner of the 2nd Quarter 2019 Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association's Virginia Speak up for Safety award!  Paige is an outstanding nurse, she is an important member of the CSJH ICU team, and she is a dedicated advocate for patient safety.  Congratulations Paige and thank you for all that you do for our patients!

Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital has earned the Gold Level Go Clear Award™ for its achievement in eliminating hazardous smoke from its surgical procedures.

Blacksburg outpatient physical therapist Tyler Spahr noticed that patients that utilized assistive devices were having difficulty accessing the front entrance to the facility he was working in due to town regulations that limited ramps onto the sidewalk by the front door of the facility. He worked tirelessly for several months to find a solution to this issue in order to allow patients to have easier access to the clinic.

Monica Coles, Gerontology CNS and Annie Phillips-Smith, 10 West UD are demonstrating three of the 5 Carilion Values in that they are very Compassionate and Committed to the provision of high-quality care for the older adult.

I want recognize two staff members, Nameer Alasadi and Paula Robinson,  working on R5 psych rehab who had a great catch while being so diligent at their job that they were able to avert a possible very serious patient safety situation!  

I wanted to take the opportunity to say Thank You to Charles Hunter, Environmental Services, he is committed and truly cares about his job, and realizes the responsibility it entails.
