National Radiologic Technology Week is celebrated annually to recognize the vital work of Radiologic Technologists across the nation. The celebration takes place during the week of November 8th to commemorate the discovery of the X-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895.

Congratulations to Jill Lucas Drakeford for winning the 2021 Governor’s EMS Award for Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medical Service for Children. Preventable injuries are the leading cause of death for children in the United States. Jill Lucas Drakeford has made it her mission to reverse that statistic. As a Community Health Educator and Carilion Clinic’s Safe Kids Southwest Virginia Coordinator, Jill goes above and beyond to protect the health and safety of our region’s children.

She is awarded the CFMH Great Catch Award for September 2021 for her keen Cross Monitoring Skills. Brook caught that an order was entered on the wrong patient and potentially prevented a bad outcome by her attention to detail and monitoring of the record during an admission from the Emergency Department to the Acute Care Unit.
I would like to give a big THANK YOU to our organizational Genetic Counselors. They are a small but mighty group that help to educate and counsel patients and family members about their genetic risk, partnering with the care team for decision making. Please take the time on November 4th to thank a genetics counselor for the amazing job that they do supporting and educating our patients and providers.
Carilion Giles Community Hospital's scarecrow entry was awarded 1st Place in this year's Best Traditional Scarecrow category of the Pearisburg Merchants Association Scarecrow contest. The Tractor Riding Scarecrow was created by the CGCH Maintenance Department's Don Mullins and Jamie Burton. Thank you Don and Jamie...Great Job!!
After 30 years with Carilion, the Shenandoah Valley bid farewell to a wonderful person and clinic manager. Delores Grimm started at Weyers Cave as an HAA 30 years ago, and was promoted to manager of Weyers Cave a few years later. She managed Weyers Cave for close to 20 years before also taking over the Fort Defiance family medicine office. She retired on her birthday, November 1st, and she will be greatly missed!!
