Recently, a Nurse Leader noticed something that didn't seem quite right and took the time to speak up. Because of that attention to detail and willingness to ask questions, a potential patient safety risk was identified and addressed before it could have a broader impact. What began as a single observation led to the discovery of a system-wide issue, demonstrating the impact one person can have by speaking up. Our patients are safer when team members stay engaged, trust their instincts, and raise concerns when something doesn't seem right.

Infection Prevention and Control Week 2026 is on the horizon! Our theme this year is "Generations of Infection Prevention"
This year, from October 19-25th, Carilion's Infection Prevention and Control Department will be celebrating all things infection control!
This includes an in-person educational event on Monday of that week AND daily lunch and learn webinars Tuesday-Friday. Topics for these sessions include, emerging infectious disease threats, cleaning and disinfection, hand hygiene and isolation!
Our Nurse Residents spent the day sharpening their evidence-based practice skills through literature appraisal and exploring how research informs clinical decision-making. To round out the experience, residents enjoyed a visit with Meadow and connected with resources from Wellness at Work and the Employee Assistance Program. A great day of learning, growth, and well-being! 💙🐾📚
A team of Carilion researchers, led by Anita Kablinger, MD, vice chair for research, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, developed and studied the effectiveness of a standardized, online training program to help psychiatrists more consistently interpret the results of questionnaires that track patient symptoms.
Despite the best available therapy, approximately 1 million Americans have uncontrolled epilepsy, which often excludes them from daily activities like driving. In addition, many current anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are poorly effective and cause undesirable side effects.

I wasn’t sure who the best person to contact is regarding the Wow Wall, but I wanted to share a quick suggestion.
The recognition is a great idea, and it’s really nice to see people acknowledged for their Collaboration, Commitment, Compassion, Courage, and Curiosity. I did notice, though, that the photographs are quite small, which makes them hard to fully appreciate.
It might be worth considering using larger photos so those being recognized are more visible and celebrated.
