This week we are recognizing the unsung heroes of the Operating Room, our surgical technologists. They provide the highest quality of care to our patients and make sure that everything that is needed for surgery is prepared and ready to go. Often patients do not know or remember this critical member of our team but we could not do it without them!
As always, thanks to David Bowers for providing great teamwork when changes are needed to the Project Log. David has made several changes recently which has enhanced our workflow.

Since joining Community Health and Outreach at the end of June, Carilion Community Health Worker Amanda Smith serves our community to improve Hepatitis C treatment participation.
Security Officer Micheal VanHoosier, AKA Blue, is well known as CNRV's number one Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He is even more well known for his kind heart and compassionate nature. On September 3 he transported a discharged patient to the bus stop in Christiansburg. Mike noticed the man had no shoe laces in one of his shoes, and his shoe was flopping around loose on his foot. Mike did not want to send the man on his journey in this condition. He took the shoe lace out of his own boot so that the man could tie up his shoe properly.
Saving lives here at Carilion New River Valley not only for the people of our community but the lives of others. Today I was coming into work, When I notice something that was moving in the dumpster. It was 3 kittens that have gotten stuck inside. They were wet and crying for help, The kittens was trying to jump out but was unsuccessful. I immediately called security when they arrived they assessed the situation. They immediately called for maintenance to come with a ladder to help the kittens.

The manager at Blue Ridge Family Medicine, Karen Crowder is one of a kind. She is always willing to go above and beyond her job duties for her staff and patients. She is very thoughtful and caring. During the night shift on a Friday night no less, Dr. David Fleming the pharmacist in the lobby of RMH took the time to have my prescriptions transferred from the Crystal Springs Pharmacy to RMH in the middle of the night without me even asking. I figured this was something that had to be done during 'normal' hours but he took the time to get my prescription to me with having to transfer pharmacies and with their system shutting down for three hours as well. He was very kind and definitely left a positive impact on my night!
The staff at CRBH, led by Case Management and the Medical-Surgical Staff, recently recognized a long-term stay patient with a birthday/going away party. The patient had discharge disposition issues that case manager (Paige Perkins, RN) worked diligently to solve. The patient needed clothing and personal items, and the CRBH staff responded with donations to help prepare the patient for the next step of his journey. The staff held a birthday party for the patient, and the patient described the party as one of the best birthday experiences of his life. Thank you to the
