Meet Carmen Nolen, a Nurse Practitioner who works for Cardiothoracic surgery at RMH. Last fall, a non-English speaking patient underwent cardiothoracic surgery. At the time of discharge, it was apparent this patient had extensive difficulties understanding their medication regimen. Carmen found a cleaver solution to help. She purchased a medication pill box with a sun and moon picture to help aid this patient in understanding when to take their medicine. Since then, a Carilion logo medication box has been made for instances such as this.

Our patient was in the hospital during their 50th anniversary. I asked Chelsea in dining services if they had any cake or special item we may be able to provide on their special day. They went above and beyond with two pieces of cake and a really pretty bird house. The patient and her husband were thrilled that Carilion made their day special!

10th Annual Stepping Up to the Plate/Wellness Walk

35 community members came together Tuesday evening (June 25th) to collect food for A Child Shall Lead Them Food Pantry in Tazewell, VA.  The group enjoyed a wellness walk from Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital to the local food pantry and back totaling 4.6 miles round trip.  Blood pressure screenings, giveaways, and refreshments were provided to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of this community supported event. A special thank you to everyone who participated in the donation of 217.5 pounds of collected food.

Carilion Operating Room's own John Salas, Jeff Kessel MD and Chris Kalmar MD have created an educational show on PBS in the Roanoke Valley on channels 4 COX, Comcast, Direct TV and Dish on Wednesdays at 7pm.  Four programs have aired previously and there are more to come. We are so proud of this team who dedicate themselves to our patients everyday and are also going above and beyond to provide education for our Community. CGCH Hosts Melanoma Screening Event

May is Melanoma Awareness Month and to recognize this, CGCH Staff members- Amy Marshall, Kourtney Williams, Ann Jimenez, Christina Salazar, Judy Psathas, Veronica Stump, Chastity Fontaine, and Isabella Jimenez- hosted a Melanoma Awareness Event on May 14th for the community. Dr. Hurd and his office staff provided free melanoma screenings while our staff provided education on melanoma prevention and detecttion as well as delicious food. Donations came from all over the hospital for the event. It is so wonderful to see our staff coming together to improve the health of our community!

Team Unity in Health Analytics

Shalu Kalvakolanu is a Business Intelligence Developer with Health Analytics.  She entered a painting in the Employee Art Show, and won Second Place in the Amateur category.  Her painting "Depth" was offered for sale, but she let the team know that if it was not sold, she would like for it to be hung on our office wall.
