Flight Scene Excellence!

I would like to recognize the extreme clinical expertise of our Carilion Clinic Flight Teams. Recently, while working clinically in CRMH ED, I received a patient from Carilion Flight Paramedic Taylor Powell and Carilion Flight Nurse Lindsey Bixel.

Their flight was a scene response in one of our rural counties. They partnered with local EMS/Fire on a very difficult extrication of the patient. In addition to Rapid Sequence Intubation, they also started blood products while on scene.

Dr. Ellie Nowak, MD and Dr. Lauren McDaniel, PharmD, both of Carilion’s antimicrobial stewardship team, were recently featured in a prime-time news segment on WDBJ Channel 7. The piece focused on a new research collaboration between Carilion and The Virginial Tech Environmental Engineering team led by Dr. Amy Pruden. The research is looking at shared antimicrobial resistance genes found in both patients and the environment.
