VIDEO: Hospice Volunteers Tend to Patients Through Gardening

There are more ways than one to provide support and companionship to our patients as a Hospice volunteer.

Some of our volunteers help in the office with data entry, packaging supplies and creating admission packets. Some will interview a patient on their life story and create an audio recording to share with families. And others tend to our three garden plots at the Mountain View Community Garden in Roanoke to grow and deliver fresh vegetables to our patients and their families.

With Gary Scott’s sudden passing last month, a huge hole was left in our hearts as well as a void in our team. As we evaluate our current leadership needs in the Department of Surgery, we’ve asked a familiar face, Stephen Lovern, to take on the role of interim vice president. We’re grateful for Stephen’s willingness to step into this position, particularly during this difficult time.

We have received a $1 million gift from Roanoke businessman and longtime community benefactor Maury Strauss. He made the gift in honor of his late wife, Sheila, to support the expansion of our cancer program.

The cause is close to Maury’s heart after losing his wife of 65 years to cancer in 2016. Expanding the number and scope of clinical trials available locally was the primary motivation for his gift.

The vice president of Medicine role has grown over the years, with a large span of control over 12 Medicine department sections and a majority of the CMC inpatient beds. Debbie Huddleston’s retirement provided the opportunity to re-evaluate this position, and we’ve decided to divide this role. We are happy to announce that Hunter Choate has accepted the position of vice president of Medicine/Ambulatory-Clinic and Lindsay Collins has accepted the position of vice president of Medicine/Acute Care Services.
