In the small dental office at Roanoke’s Bradley Free Clinic, these translations and dozens more are found on laminated lists and handwritten notes tacked up in the examination room, next to the front desk, and on the x-ray machine—prompts for dentists and hygienists trying to communicate with their growing Spanish-speaking clientele. 

The Carilion Clinic Investigator Series, a new program from the Human Research Protections Office, launches this month with a virtual talk by Albert Arias, MD, titled “The Ethics of Clinical Research in Populations with Addiction.”

Our 2026 Research Day held Tuesday, April 21 at CRMH attracted more than 200 participants and featured 25 oral presentations and 66 posters covering a breadth of research topics. 

Through real-world projects and collaboration with experienced teams, student interns gain valuable skills, fresh perspectives, and confidence that will serve them throughout their careers. In turn, they inject renewed energy into our organization that encourages innovation and promotes a culture of learning and growth—contributions that not only meet immediate staffing needs but also lay the groundwork for a strong and capable workforce in the years ahead.

When Megan and Mac Foster found out they were expecting, they were ecstatic. But joy soon turned to sorrow when their daughter, Poppy, arrived stillborn.

Stillbirths are rare, affecting less than 1% of all pregnancies in the U.S. Megan, a nursing unit director at CRMH, learned a genetic blood-clotting disorder contributed to their loss.

To help other families honor their stillborn child, the Fosters raised more than $7,000 toward the purchase of a Caring Cradle, the latest generation cooling bassinet that allows grieving parents to spend more time with their baby.

Our Employee Art Show is back for its 10th year—stop by the CRMH lobby atrium May 27 through June 19 to see artwork from Carilion employees, volunteers, retirees, and family members.

 A reception and awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 5 – 7 p.m., in the south lobby.
