Pediatric Stroke: Early Management of a young teen with Stroke

CRMH recently received a stroke alert on a 13-year-old patient. Although stroke is less common in children than in adults, the long-term morbidity and societal impact of stroke in children exceeds that in adults. Our stroke protocol constitutes important steps in ensuring that patients are diagnosed in a time frame that enables acute treatment. Due to the quick assessment of the patient, our team delivered a thrombolytic therapy (tPA/clot buster) and performed a thrombectomy procedure (removal of clot in Interventional Radiology). 

The stroke recognition, rapid response, imaging, and treatment of the ischemic stroke patient resulted in no deficits/return to normal baseline. This is a great patient outcome, groundbreaking event, and accomplishment.
