Join Our Community Canned Food Drive in July

Submitted by akbrelyn on

The need for healthy food is on the rise in our community, and we’re up for the challenge to give back! You can further showcase our values of Compassion and CommUNITY through food donations and volunteering hours at Feeding Southwest Virginia (FSWVA) or other local food bank.

Canned Food Drive

Join a Canned Food Drive from July 18-31 to help restock local food sources. We’re recommending food items that meet dietary guidelines reflected on the USDA MyPlate image. Examples include:

  • fruits and juice
  • vegetables
  • dairy
  • rice, pasta and other whole grains
  • protein sources

Donations should be dropped off at FSWVA located at 1025 Electric Road, Salem or participate at another local food bank. Each department is responsible for donation delivery and reporting collection totals to Carilion Community Health and Outreach prior to August 1.

Volunteer

In addition, we’ve coordinated volunteer opportunities at FSWVA. Sign up (below) individually or as a department in 4-hour shifts. Additional volunteer options may be available at a food bank close to you. Work with your manager to coordinate your regular work shift and available volunteer times.

Sign up now!

  • Quality Assurance: evaluate donated food products by inspecting and sorting packaged food products to control for such issues as shelf life (dates), dented cans, crushed boxes, or other superficially damaged food.
  • Children’s Feeding Kitchen: Help prepare healthy meals for children. Chopping, cutting, packing, light dish washing, assist with inventory/pulls (some lifting involved).
  • Mobile Marketplace: XXX

Be sure to snap a picture of your group and share it on the WOW Wall!

Funding for Food

Carilion joins Delta Dental and Freedom First to offer monetary donations to FSWVA. We’re giving $10,000 for this initiative, in addition to a $10,000 community grant awarded to FSWVA Food Farmacy program which provides fresh produce and other foods to those suffering from dietary-related illnesses.

As an added incentive, food drive participants from the department that collects the most units of canned foods will win a refreshing summer treat!

To qualify, pool department collections for a total unit report and deliver to FSWVA or other food bank before August 1.

The winner will be announced in August through Inside Carilion.
