E-recycling event diverts 40,045 pounds of e-waste from landfills and raises $5,619 for Carilion’s new cancer center!
On January 8, 2022, Carilion’s Sustainability Department hosted the first-ever Carilion Electronics Drive-Through Recycling Day. This event provided community members with an opportunity to recycle old electronics in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
Over 750 cars attended the event and we collected 40,045 pounds of electronics to be recycled! This was made up of:
-
23,000 pounds of printers/consumer electronics
-
3,770 pounds of computer towers
-
2,650 pounds of laptops
-
655 pounds of cell phones and tablets
This event was a fundraiser for The Carilion Clinic Foundation’s campaign for the new cancer center, as all funds raised from the revenue of recycled material were donated to this cause. The total donation was $5,619.
This event was a collaboration among various internal departments (Sustainability, Marketing and Communications, Property Maintenance, Carilion Clinic Design, Human Resources, Emergency Management) and our recycling partner, River Acceptance.
A special thank you to our 19 volunteers who dedicated their time to help at the event and kept cars moving through safely and efficiently!
We are in the early phases of planning another event at Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital this summer. Be on the lookout for more details in the coming months. For questions, reach out to Marina Sotelo, Efficiency and Sustainability Coordinator – mcsotelo@carilionclinic.org
