Vaccination Clinics Heroes

Having the honor of serving on the Berglund Center COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics Steering Committee has provided me the opportunity to witness acts of compassion and heroism by our volunteers at every event since January.  I recently observed occupational therapist Amanda Fortuna and ED physician Dr. Aimee Conlee going above and beyond their regular volunteer roles to provide comfort and compassion to two elderly and frail individuals who were struggling after their vaccines.  They remained at each individual's side providing comfort while EMS evaluated them, and were instrumental in helping convince them that it was in their best interest to be transported to the ED for further evaluation.  Dr. Stephen Lovern, senior director OR administration, who gave one of the individuals his shot, showed concern at the end of his shift and took the time to check on his condition after he was transported to the ED.  Christina Blankenship and Richie Williams from Botetourt EMS were extremely compassionate and caring during their evaluations and discussions with both individuals to transport them.  Christina communicated in a calm, compassionate, but confident manner.  A member of our fantastic Army National Guard made a personal connection with one of the individuals and offered to take him out for coffee once he was discharged from the ED.  This man's face lit up at this offer.  He had mentioned that he lives alone and has very little family support.

These are just a few of the many examples of heroism that occur at every vaccination clinic.  Thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to make these events such a success!
