Emergency Department surprises Volunteer Services!

Submitted by slflowers on

Carilion Clinic's Emergency Department (ED) demonstrated the spirit of generosity this Thanksgiving holiday! ED Patient Rep. Mary Wheeling asked her co-workers to help her support Volunteer Services' clothes closet. ED staff dug deep and donated $512.69! Mary took the money and spent every penny of it buying new and gently used clothing for the closet. She delivered three huge boxes to Volunteer Manager Shanna Flowers on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. Since its inception in July 2016, the clothes closet has distributed 1,718 clothing items to discharging patients in need or whose clothes were cut off for treatment. Mary, who has worked at Carilion five years, said she frequently visits the closet to get clothes for patients in need. She does a community project each year. She decided to select the clothes closet as the recipient this year, and she asked her ED co-workers to join her. Volunteer Services is so appreciative of the generosity of our brothers and sisters in the Emergency Department. On behalf of the patients who benefit from the closet, thank you!
