New Lactation Services Program Supports Families With Infant Feeding
Every family's infant feeding experience is different. Whether parents are breastfeeding, pumping, using formula, or combining feeding methods, having the right support can make a difference.
Carilion Children's and Carilion Women's have partnered to offer a new lactation services program. The program helps families navigate feeding challenges, answer questions, and build confidence in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
How Lactation Consultants Can Help
Lactation consultants work with parents to understand their feeding goals and provide personalized guidance. Depending on the family's needs, appointments may include:
- Assessing breastfeeding positions, latch, and milk transfer
- Addressing breast or nipple pain and milk supply concerns
- Helping with breast pumps, flange sizing, and milk storage
- Providing guidance on pumping, returning to work, weaning, and other common challenges
- Connecting families with additional care from pediatrics, OB-GYN, primary care, or ENT when needed
Understanding Common Breastfeeding Myths
Breastfeeding can come with questions and misconceptions. Our Lactation Services team helps parents separate fact from fiction.
For example, breastfeeding does not always take more time than formula feeding. Parents can also combine breastfeeding with formula feeding. Breast milk provides important health benefits, but formula also offers the nutrients babies need to grow and develop.
Most importantly, there is no single feeding approach that works for every family. Lactation consultants help families understand their options and make decisions that work for them and their babies.
What to Expect at an Appointment
Appointments take place at Carilion Children's - Tanglewood in Roanoke. Parents should bring their baby and check in at the registration desk, where a lactation consultant will meet them.
During the visit, the consultant will review the parent's and baby's medical history, discuss their feeding experience, and address concerns. Families will receive individualized guidance based on their needs and goals.
