We’ve Applied to Develop the Carilion Christiansburg Center

Submitted by pslarkin on

We have applied to the Virginia Division of Certificate of Public Need (VDCOPN) to build the Carilion Christiansburg Center.

Our application asks to relocate one of CNRV's CT scanners to the Christiansburg Center, which will be built in the Town of Christiansburg. The Christiansburg Center will house an Emergency Department and outpatient care services—providing much-needed, expanded access for patients in our communities in the growing New River Valley region and Interstate 81 corridor.

“The Christiansburg Center represents an important step in our commitment to expanding access to care across the growing New River Valley,” said Paul Davenport, Senior Vice President. “Our goal is to bring more care closer to where patients live and work, while connecting them to Carilion. By integrating emergency and outpatient services within our broader health system, we can provide a more coordinated, seamless experience for patients and better meet the evolving needs of the communities we serve.”

Landmark Healthcare Facilities LLC will partner with us to develop, design, and construct the project and will provide ongoing property and facility management services upon completion. We will lease and operate the facility. This is the latest opportunity for us to collaborate through a strategic partnership that will help us expand access to high-quality care effectively and sustainably.

The COPN process takes time. The earliest we’ll hear from the VDCOPN about our application is next March or April.

Certificate of Public Need (COPN) is Virginia’s formal review process for proposed healthcare facilities, equipment and services.

COPN was created by the Commonwealth to help control healthcare costs, preserve availability and promote access to care, and prevent selective overexpansion that could threaten the healthcare safety net, which applies conditions to offset the financial assistance our hospitals offer to patients who don’t have the means to pay.

The facility will include an emergency department and expanded outpatient services.

It helps us meet demand in the growing New River Valley Region and Interstate 81 corridor.

We expect the state to complete reviewing our Certificate of Public Need (COPN) application by March or April 2027.
