Oncology Navigation Success
Andria Smith, Pediatric Oncology Nurse Navigator, recently demonstrated the incredible impact navigation can have beyond the walls of the clinic. Through the trusting relationship she built with a patient and family, she identified a significant barrier that could have delayed a safe discharge home.
Recognizing the need, she quickly connected the family with a community organization that provides support to pediatric oncology families and coordinated communication between all parties to help move the process forward. Because of her advocacy, persistence, and resourcefulness, the necessary accommodations were completed in time for the patient to return home after an extended hospitalization.
This story is a wonderful example of how oncology navigation extends beyond coordinating appointments and treatments. By identifying barriers, leveraging community resources, and advocating for patients and families, our navigators help ensure that patients can safely continue their care where they most want to be, at home.
