Teaming Up for Patient Safety

Patient safety is our top priority, and everyone contributes to preventing harm, regardless of our role in patient care. That's why we are all safer when we work together.

Patient Safety Awareness Week (PSAW) is this week through Saturday, March 14, and the ideal time to celebrate our achievements in making healthcare safer for everyone, while also recognizing our ongoing efforts for continuous improvement.

Great Care Starts with Strong Teamwork!

Patient safety takes a team of those supporting each other at every level. Taking the time to look at a situation more closely, asking questions, and speaking up when something doesn’t seem right are essential steps that help prevent harm. 

By teaming up together, we can get more done in the most effective and safe way possible. More knowledgeable eyes on a situation help identify potential risks earlier, reinforce best practices, and strengthen our shared commitment to excellence.  

When we collaborate, communicate, and care for each other, we create safer environments for our patients and for ourselves, so it only makes sense the theme of this year's PSAW is "Team Up for Patient Safety." 

If you haven't yet seen the calendar of events, we want to let you know there are many activities taking place this week to help you learn more about the great work that's already happening and how we can work together to keep our patients safe—participate in any or all of them!

PSAW Events

SafeWatch Q&A sessions

Dates for location-specific sessions:

  • Tuesday, March 10: CNRV, CGCH, CTCH
  • Wednesday, March 11 and Thursday, March 12: CMC 
  • Friday, March 13: CFMH, CRBH

All sessions will be held 10 - 11 a.m. on Teams.

Patient Safety Awareness Week Lunch and Learn Sessions

Different topics will be covered each day.

  • Monday, March 9:  HAPIs Prevention
  • Tuesday, March 10: Mobility for Pt Safety
  • Wednesday, March 11: Infection Prevention
  • Thursday, March 12:  Human Factors 101
  • Friday, March 13: Falls Prevention

All sessions will be held noon - 12:30 p.m. on Teams.

Thursday, March 12, 11 a.m. - noon

Join Dr. Robert Wachter for this Lucian Leape Institute (LLI) webinar as he examines the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in health care and what it means for quality, safety, cost, and the clinician experience. He shares practical insights on how AI can meaningfully improve a system under strain, along with highlights from his new book, A Giant Leap.

We are all safer when we work together. For effective, safe care, we must be able to provide care in a kind and collaborative environment. Find effective ways to engage everyone in conversation. Encourage patients and family members to be involved in the care process and let them ask, “How can we work together to make my care safer?”

The Patient Safety Awareness Week began in 2002 with the vision of a small group of people, including a patient and family advocate whose child died due to preventable medical error. It was sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation and continues today under the leadership of Institute for Healthcare Improvement following the 2017 merger between the two organizations. It serves as a global call to action and reminder that for safety to be realized, it must be embraced as the core value of individuals and organizations across health care and coproduced in the spirit of togetherness across the full community of patients, families, health care leaders, and every member of the health care workforce.
