Nominate a Sustainability Leader for 2026

Did you, a coworker, or your team recently complete an initiative or project that made a positive impact on the environment? If so, now is the time to recognize that work by submitting a nomination or application for the 2026 Sustainability Leadership Awards.

The Sustainability Leader Individual and Sustainability Leader Team Awards are peer-selected honors recognizing Carilion Clinic individuals, units, or departments that champion sustainability above and beyond the call of duty. Award recipients demonstrate accountability in helping Carilion advance environmental responsibility, reduce costs, and prioritize energy, water, and waste conservation.

Examples of sustainability initiatives include:

• Implementing a process to reduce unused or expired medical supplies
• Replacing single-use items with approved reusable alternatives
• Improving recycling accuracy through staff education and clearer signage
• Reducing energy use by adjusting equipment shutdown practices after hours
• Partnering with Environmental Services to improve waste stream separation
• Introducing digital workflows to replace manual or paper-based processes
• Reducing water use through workflow changes or equipment optimization
• Coordinating a unit-wide effort to right-size supply ordering and inventory levels

To apply or nominate a colleague or team, complete the 2026 Sustainability Leadership Award Application Form.

While the name of this award has changed this year, it is the same recognition program previously offered and remains open to all Carilion Clinic employees. A formal leadership title is not required—any staff member or team demonstrating leadership through sustainability-focused actions is encouraged to apply or be nominated.

The deadline for submissions is March 15.

The Sustainability Department, along with a panel of judges, will select award recipients based on cost savings, budget maintenance, and the effective use of sustainability initiatives implemented within their unit or department.
