Our Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Hospital Has Been Approved

The Virginia Division of Certificate of Public Need (VDCOPN) has approved our application for a new 50-bed inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital to be built in the City of Roanoke. We’re continuing to negotiate a partnership with Riverdale Southeast, LLC, to build the hospital in the Riverdale mixed-use development and lease it to Carilion.

The decision builds on our system-wide work to expand access to care, including state-level approval to create our kidney transplant program, our Westlake and Daleville Emergency Department announcements and CFMH’s newly opened Pediatrics practice.

Our physical rehabilitation team is well known for the excellent care they provide to patients who need help recovering from traumatic brain injuries, strokes, spinal cord damage and other serious conditions.

We’re continuing to negotiate a joint venture with Select Medical, a company nationally recognized for partnering with healthcare systems to provide inpatient rehabilitation care. Our joint venture would allow us to benefit from Select’s financial resources, knowledge and expertise to boost the IPR care we provide to our community and serve even more patients.

Earlier this spring, Collins and others began meeting with our inpatient rehabilitation employees to ask for their input about partnering with Select. “We’re grateful for everything the IPR team has shared with us about the best ways for us to elevate patient care,” said Collins.

The new hospital will house 34 medical rehabilitation beds relocated from CRCH and 16 new beds. Additional plans for clinical care at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital are being developed.

The proposed hospital could open as early as late 2027.
