Sharing Knowledge, Expanding Care Globally

Recently, Drs. Eric Marvin, Srijan Adhikari and Mark Witcher traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, to collaborate with the neurosurgical team at Bir Hospital, part of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Bir Hospital provides critical care to approximately 30 million citizens and serves as the country’s primary public health care site.

The team focused on introducing advanced surgical techniques previously unavailable in Nepal, including treatments for Parkinson’s disease and dystonia, skull base and complex spine surgery and kyphoplasty. Prior training efforts have included deep brain stimulation (DBS) and radiofrequency pallidotomy for patients not eligible for DBS.

Thanks to equipment donations from Carilion Clinic, Bir Hospital is now able to perform many of these procedures independently—advancing neurosurgical care for patients across Nepal. Congratulations, team, on the many successful outcomes for the people of Nepal!
