3D printing and collaboration to enhance surgical precision
Carilion Clinic Orthopedic Surgery (Dr. Bravo), Carilion Clinic Innovation (Rob Fippinger), and the Carilion Clinic Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety (Robert Hedge) recently collaborated to create a patient specific 3D anatomical model for pre-surgical planning. By working together, the team used the patient’s own X-ray to digitally design, and 3D print a custom anatomical model of an osteochondroma on the front of the left shoulder blade. This cutting-edge approach gave the surgeon a precise preview of what they would encounter, making the procedure more efficient and leading to a smoother, more successful surgery. By saving valuable time in the operating room and improving the patient’s outcome, this effort showcases the power of technology in transforming surgical care.
