Update to MyChart Accounts for Some Teens and Young Adults

To protect patient privacy and ensure we are complying with federal and state laws, we are taking steps to protect MyChart accounts for some patients ages 12-22.

What is Changing and When

Starting on Feb. 15, some MyChart accounts for patients ages 12-22 will be deactivated:

• MyChart accounts that have not been accessed since Dec. 31, 2022.
• Accounts with lapsed proxy access.
• Accounts that share an email address with another account.  

Patients will need to re-register if they want a MyChart account.

How to Re-Register

Patients who are 18 or older can register by visiting CarilionClinic.org/mychart and requesting an activation code.

Patients ages 12-18 need their parent's permission have a MyChart account. To register:

• At their next scheduled appointment with any Carilion provider, the minor teen can request to activate their MyChart account.  

• The provider will speak with the patient about setting up proxy access for the parent/legal guardian and provide the necessary forms. A parent or guardian and the minor teen must complete and sign the necessary My Chart forms in the office. 

• The parent will automatically have limited proxy access. The teen can choose whether to give the parent full proxy access to their full medical record.

What medical information can parents or legal guardians view? 

Minor teens can decide who can view their full medical records in MyChart. Proxy access is when someone other than the patient can access and manage their health records. There are two types of proxy access: 

1. Full proxy access allows the parent/guardian to view all medical records for their minor teen through the parent/guardian’s MyChart account. Minor teens can grant full proxy access to a parent or legal guardian. This access must be renewed each year. Full access to your minor teen’s MyChart requires the minor teen’s signature as well as their doctor's signature in person at their next visit. If needed, parents/guardians can call their minor teen’s provider for appointment information while the minor teen’s account is deactivated.

2. Limited proxy access is the default setting and does not require annual renewal. Limited access allows viewing of all records on MyChart except appointments, provider notes, messages with the provider/care team, lab results and records related to healthcare which, under Virginia law, require the minor teen’s consent for release, such as certain mental health, substance abuse, and sexual health records.

We appreciate your understanding as we make these changes to protect privacy. Additionally, these changes will benefit minor teens who do not have supportive adults in their life or may be in crisis.
