AMAZING collaboration in the ED

I would just like to take a moment and recognize the entire ED dept including the front desk staff, day and night shift. I am a Carilion employee and a previous inpatient worker, but this past Friday night I was a patient. When arriving to the ED, as expected it was very busy. There were no rooms and it seemed as if they were at max capacity. Every staff member that I encountered was in good spirits and had a smile on! Even with encountering several disgruntled patients.

The organization that I saw to ensure patient care was top priority was astounding. Vitals were still being checked per protocol, everyone was working together, all staff members were taking different assignments, patients were still being seen in any private location they could locate, patients were escorted from the waiting room to X-Ray, CT, Ultrasound etc, all nursing staff were constantly reassuring patients that they mattered, often apologized, (even though the staff had no control over the wait times) provided blankets if the patients or loved ones were cold etc. I was amazed and blown away at their response during all of this. Their skill, compassion, willingness, strength and hardwork was something I recognized and didn't go un-noticed. I'm sure this is something they deal with often if not everyday, but that night I remembered why I love being apart of Carilion!
