Your short-term and long-term disability benefits replace a portion of your earnings if you are not able to work due to accident, illness or injury. Our disability benefit plans are administered by New York Life. New York Life will be our new Life and Disability Vendor as or Jan. 1, 2024.

Note: If you have an Open Disability claim prior to Dec. 31, 2023, please reach out to The Standard at 888-288-1389 with questions. Any disability case where the event date is Jan. 1 2024 or after will be handled by New York Life.

SHORT-TERM DISABILITY BENEFITS

Plan 1- Short-Term Disability

  • Short-term disability replaces 60 percent of your eligible earnings, paid to you weekly after you have been out of work for at least 14 days.
  • To see full details, review STD Coverage Highlights.

Plan 2- Short-Term Disability Buy-Up

Short-term disability replaces 60 percent of your eligible earnings, paid to you weekly after you have been out of work for at least 7 days.

  • This means you use less PTO before your disability benefit payments begin.
  • The premiums for the buy-up plan are higher than the the premiums for the base (14 day) plan.  Click on the Contribution Summary to compare premiums between the two plans.
  • To see full details, review STD Coverage Highlights..

Late Enrollment Penalty

  • If you enroll in either STD plan during Open Enrollment for 2024 benefits, your coverage is guaranteed. If you do not enroll during this Open Enrollment period, or when you first become eligible to enroll, you may have to provide evidence of good health to be covered and/or wait longer for your disability benefit payments to start.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY

  • Long-term disability replaces 60 percent of your eligible earnings, paid to you monthly after you have been out of work for at least 150 days.
  • Payments may continue until you are no longer considered disabled, possibly until Social Security normal retirement age or later depending on your age on the date of disability.
  • If your long-term disability insurance ends because you leave Carilion or change to part-time or flex status, you may be eligible to continue your coverage by converting it to an individual policy. Some limits may apply to the amount you can continue through conversion. Contact New York Life at 888-842-4462 for more information about converting your long-term disability coverage.
