In response to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) mandate requiring DEA Healthcare Provider License Holders (physicians and advanced care practitioners) to complete a one-time 8 hours of Type 1 (AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM) education specific to substance use disorders effective June 27, 2023, is what we want to highlight on the WOW Wall.
COLLABORATION between Carilion Mental Health, Carilion OB/GYN, and Carilion Clinic’s Continuing Medical Education Department took advantage of an opportunity to help physicians meet these 8 hours of Type 1 continuing education. Carilion Mental Health and Carilion OB/GYN developed a 4-hour educational course (Domain Day) that was presented May 26, 2023, at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) which met the criteria for Type 1 continuing education. The course was recorded by VTCSOM Educational Technology, and the recording was shared with the CME Office. The video was edited and housed on the CME Website as Enduring Material for DEA Healthcare Provider License Holders as a jump-start for the one-time 8-hours of Type 1 credit on substance use disorders’ mandate.
This COLLABORATION & COMMITMENT to END the Substance Use Disorders was extended to provide AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM for other continuing educational opportunities.
The opioid epidemic has been a significant issue for over two decades, especially in Southwest Virginia. The severity of this epidemic can be reduced by a clinical communication system that is provider-and-patient centered to improve care, mitigating the risk of delayed necessary, and ultimately life-saving treatment to patients. Carilion Mental Health identified the gap (clinical communication) and addressed the need to make available information to health care professionals to implement an algorithm (acute treatment [ED] to follow-up/long-term treatment) matching the severity of the disorder. Securing AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM was a WIN-WIN for the patients and physicians. Patients who present to the emergency room with a non-fatal overdose, acute withdrawal symptoms, or requesting treatment, would be rapidly connected with follow-up care corresponding to the severity of their disease. Physicians receiving Type 1 continuing education appropriate to substance use disorders will no doubt improve quality of care, and patients will have the opportunity to improve their emotional and physical well-being and their quality of life.
