Clay Leftwich Goes Above and Beyond to Show Compassion
Story shared by volunteer Beth O'Brochta-
In his position as parking attendant in Guest Services, Clay Leftwich strives daily to assist every patient, family, and employee with whom he interacts. Always greeting each person with a smile, Clay often “goes the extra mile” to achieve the best outcome. He demonstrated his compassion when he aided an elderly, frail dementia patient who had arrived alone in the Emergency Department and was quite confused about his trip home. When Clay learned that the patient was sitting at the bus stop, he left his post, walked to the bus stop, and waited ten minutes for the bus to arrive. Speaking with the driver, Clay learned that the driver knew the gentleman and assured Clay that he would assist the patient in completing his transfer to the appropriate bus. Then, Clay helped the frail man climb into the bus and be seated. That patient was quite fortunate to interact with a special hospital employee who “goes the extra mile” in his service to patients and families.
