Adolescent Medicine: Caring for Patients Age 10 to 26

From kids to early teens all the way up to young adults, patients in the 10-26 age group is at a unique time in their lives where their bodies, minds and environments are growing and changing quickly. Our Adolescent and Student Health Clinic is well-equipped to meet their needs and provide specialized care as they develop, and we're the only clinic like this in our area to offer these services for our community. Our goal is to support and empower adolescents so they can grow into healthy, thriving adults. In addition to well visits, sick visits, physicals and vaccines, Adolescent Medicine has additional services and areas of focus to educate and be sure they’re providing exceptional care and access for all in our community.

High School Clinics

In addition to the Tanglewood clinic, Adolescent Medicine has clinics at Patrick Henry High School and Willing Fleming High School that provide all the same services. These clinics were established to be sure that students can receive quality and convenient care during the regular school day. Any Roanoke City Schools student or Carilion patient can be seen at the high school clinics. In addition, the William Fleming High School clinic remains open throughout the summer.

Community Education

Adolescent Medicine educators work with students in various schools throughout the Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Salem City school systems as well as private schools to teach about age-appropriate family life topics, puberty and personal hygiene. They also work with several after-school locations such as Community Youth Program, West End Center, Goodwill Youth Headquarters and Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority; education topics range from nutrition to mental health and coping skills. This team also attends events throughout the community to further promote adolescent health.

Safe, Comfortable Environment

There are some sensitive health topics patients may wish to discuss in private with their provider. With a signed consent by a parent or guardian, Adolescent Medicine patients may be seen in a clinic without a parent or guardian present. This helps build trust with patients and allows them to share important health information that they may have otherwise been hesitant to provide. To further support patient privacy, there is a separate entrance into the Tanglewood clinic from inside the mall on the second floor.
