Transfer Center Team and the Power of Giving
An employee from the aortic center called the transfer center about a patient who was scheduled to come in as a same day admission tomorrow for AAA repair by Dr. Adams. The patient called the office expressing concern that he may not be able to get to the hospital in the morning due to the weather. His original plan was to take an Uber from Lynchburg at 0530 in the morning. He told the office he was instead going to Uber to Roanoke this evening just to make sure he could get here.
The office reached out to us to see if we had any suggestions of what to do with the patient this evening. We had some available beds on 6W with no PCU obs needs in the ED or in the transfer queue, so we suggested that Dr. Adams go ahead and admit him directly to 6W today so he would be here for surgery tomorrow and not have to stay in a hotel and worry about transport to the hospital in the morning. 6W had no problem with taking the patient, and the plan was set in motion.
The patient had already arrived to 6W and was tucked in safe and sound by the time I left work this evening. The transfer center team was amazed at this 76 year olds ability to use UBER! However, many of them have volunteered to take him home after major surgery to avoid UBER ride home!!!!
From Sandy Sayre: Stories like this is why I have invested my entire career at Carilion - there is no place better anywhere to work! Thank you transfer center team!!! Cannot beat the feeling of giving! In helping others WE become stronger!
