The Return of Roanoke's Youth Volunteers!
This morning, Volunteer Services hosted its Summer of Service Youth Volunteer Program Orientation! On June 10th, 50 high-school students will begin their volunteer assignments across Carilion's Roanoke Campus: Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion Children's & Mental Health at Tanglewood, and Riverside 3. When you see a Youth Volunteer in their light blue polo next week, say hello!
During their orientation, the youth volunteers took part in interactive activities and roleplaying to prepare for the program:
- Customer Service 101 with Shanna Flowers, Director of Guest Services
- Importance of Handwashing with Tim Lafountain, Infection Preventionist
- The Power of Art: Art Cart with Lisa Linger, Healing Arts Program Manager
- Wheelchair Education & Safety with Benny Casey, Guest Services Manager
- Hospitality Programs with Sadie Hughes and Jennifer Keeley, Volunteers
The process of interviewing, onboarding, and welcoming so many young people to our Volunteer Services program is no easy feat - it takes a village. In addition to the amazing folks above, I'd like to recognize the following people who have been instrumental in the success of this program:
- Patty Hepburn, Admin Coordinator for Security Services, who made dozens of badges for our new volunteers.
- Kathy Oakley and the Employee Health Team for scheduling two after-hours clinics to better accommodate school/work schedules during the onboarding process.
- Sue Self, Department Secretary for Guest Services, for helping with all ordering and organizing that goes into this program.
- James Justus, Guest Services Manager, and Brandy Grantham, Peds Department Secretary, at Tanglewood for being point-people for the volunteers assigned to that facility.
Everything we do in Volunteer Services points toward the value of commUNITY. When we collaborate and support each other, programs like this are possible. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of these young people who are choosing to spend their summer volunteering with Carilion Clinic!
