Showcasing the great work and mentorship of Ashley Dean, RN as presented by this heart warming email from her practicum student.

"My practicum experience with Ashley Dean has been one of the most formative and meaningful experiences of my entire nursing education. From the moment I walked in on the first day, she welcomed me with genuine warmth, patience, and encouragement, immediately making me feel comfortable, supported, and included as part of the team. She didn’t just teach me, she invested in me and that made all the difference.

Ashley is a natural educator in every sense of the word. She has the rare ability to meet a student exactly where they are, then lift them higher with just the right amount of challenge, guidance, and reassurance. She pushes her students, not out of pressure, but out of a deep belief in their potential. Every day, she encouraged me to do things independently, to think critically, to trust my judgment, and to step confidently into the role of a nurse. She wanted me to truly learn, not just observe, and she created an environment where I could safely grow and push myself.

One of the most meaningful aspects of working with Ashley was that I truly left every single shift, having learned something new. Whether it was a complex clinical concept, a subtle assessment skill, a communication strategy, or even just a small tip that made patient care smoother, she made sure that I walked away better than I arrived. She has a gift for teaching; she explains things in a way that makes sense, ties everything back to evidence-based practice, and helps you see the bigger clinical picture. She is truly meant to be a preceptor, and anyone who has the privilege of learning from her will say the same.

Her clinical excellence is matched only by her genuine compassion. I watched her care for patients and families with such dignity, empathy, and steadiness, even in the most challenging high-acuity moments. Whether it was supporting a teenager in a mental health crisis, navigating a rapid response at shift change, or caring for fragile NICU infants. She showed me the kind of nurse I want to be: strong, knowledgeable, patient, and wholeheartedly dedicated to her patients.

Beyond her role as a teacher, Ashley advocated for me in ways that I will never forget. She supported me wholeheartedly as I pursued the pediatric resource pool position, speaking up for me, and helping open doors for my new grad role. Knowing she believed in me and was willing to voice that belief meant more than she’ll ever know. Her support reaffirmed that pediatrics is where I’m meant to be and boosted my confidence walking into my first nursing job.

And somewhere along the way, Ashley became more than just my preceptor; she became someone I genuinely consider a friend. Her kindness, her sincerity, and the way she truly cared about my growth and success made this experience incredibly special. I gained a mentor I admire deeply and a friend I feel grateful to have in my life.

I am leaving this practicum a stronger, more confident, more capable nurse because of Ashley. She made an immeasurable impact on my development, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have learned from her. I could not have asked for a better preceptor, role model, or supporter during such an important part of my nursing journey."
