Lifesaving emergency through teamwork at the Southeast Family Practice

Pre-hospital emergencies require excellent teamwork and communication in addition to ingenuity, as the environment is unpredictable. The team at Southeast Family Practice provided lifesaving care to a patient who had cardiac arrest in a car in the parking lot of the clinic. Together, each member of the team provided timely and expert care and were able to safely transitioned the patient to a higher level of care. Team member Angel Johnson CMA, first on the scene, recognized and escalated swiftly; involving Dr. Werner who without delay, initiated CPR, Dr. Stewart quickly joined in providing CPR and airway support. Christine Ugron RN and charge nurse provided direction for the necessary equipment and actions. Jean Deel LPN secured critical supplies along with Tiffany Chisley LPN, and both gathered important situational data. Risa Shaffer RN tuned her attention to the family, offering compassion while gathering important patient demographic and historical information. Victoria Greene CMA was able to provide support for the team and others. The EMS team had an excellent response time and were collaborative and professional. The patient's daughter was able to move from feeling of shock and fear, to a place of appreciation, as the team provided reassuring medical updates during the course of the resuscitation. After the event, the team participated in a very professional debrief; providing both caregiver wellbeing support and in an effort to identify any areas of learning for future emergencies.
