Going above and beyond on 7 West

Submitted by mmlangford on

While sitting on 7 West, I had the pleasure of meeting Ed Mata RN. He has been here with Carilion for three weeks.. in those three weeks I can tell you he has become an asset to this hospital. This nurse is one of the kindest, most compassionate nurses I have met. He truly cares about his patients and their outcomes. While dealing with a severely depressed patient who didn't seem to trust medical staff, Ed sat down with this patient and made him feel completely comfortable. This helped really get to the root of the issues, and gave us a stepping stone to help this patient get well. The patient really opened up to Ed and they talked like they were old friends. Sharing stories and comparing life events. It was amazing to be able to sit and watch this unfold. Ed spent ample amounts of time at bedside with this patient and really made an impact on him. To have been here with the hospital for three short weeks, you'd think he had been doing this all of his life. This patient who had barely spoke to anyone since admission, talked to Ed about anything and everything. I truly believe the patients know when someone REALLY cares about them and what happens to them. And this patient was no exception. He really bonded with Ed and this will help improve his stay here with us and his journey after. I can't brag on him enough, he is truly exceptional at his job. Making connections with patients like this makes a huge difference.

Ed, You are one heck of a nurse and 7 west & Carilion are SO lucky to have you! Keep your heart of gold, our patients need nurses like you!
