Excellent Clinical Care at Rehab 7

Submitted by asparkhurst on

Lauren Goater- Mathis, PA showed outstanding clinical judgment, resourcefulness and perseverance in the care of one of her patients at the Carilion Inpatient Rehabilitation unit that well exceeds expectations.

She was taking care of a patient severe neurological condition for which the patient had progressive neurological deterioration.

At first she called the Neurologist who felt the patient needed inpatient admission for plasmapheresis.

However after calling the Transfer Center for direct admission, no beds were available with a long wait list and the only option for immediate admission was to discharge to the ED for which the patient would most likely have a long, uncomfortable and stressful wait for hospital admission.

At the time, Lauren Goater- Mathis made an excellent clinical judgment after discussion with the PM&R Attending to arrange the patient to receive the plasmapheresis while on unit.

She was able to coordinate all aspects of the care which included transportation, calling multiple consultants which included Interventional Radiology, Nephrology, and Vascular Surgery as central line access was needed so that plasmapheresis could be performed.

All aspects of these arrangements went smoothly the next morning as the patient's care was very time specific and needed to be done in the correct order.

The patient started the plasmapheresis the next day with improvement in symptoms.

Lauren Goater- Mathis, PA showed an unwavering, remarkable and outstanding commitment to make sure that all arrangements were in place so this patient could receive the necessary plasmapheresis.

This particular case is an example of the outstanding and excellent care provided by Lauren Goater-Mathis, PA in the care of her patients.
