Community Youth Program honors Cheri Hartman with Service Award

During an evening ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Dr. Cheryl Hartman was honored as the first recipient of the Cheri Hartman Service Award. This award, established in the name of Cheri Hartman, recognizes an individual who has given exceptional time, energy and resources in volunteer service to youth and families in the Roanoke Valley. Cheri served the Community Youth Program as a founder, board member, advisor, mentor, advocate and friend. With her energy, enthusiasm, and extraordinary dedication to children, youth and families in the Roanoke Valley, Cheri exemplifies the values of the Community Youth Program “Together We’re Changing Lives”. Cheri has focused her career on science-driven approaches to the prevention of school dropouts, teen pregnancy, obesity, and substance misuse and worked primarily with youth, until her shift into the addiction treatment field. She led grants projects including a childhood obesity prevention program which created school gardens in Roanoke City elementary schools and a fundraising campaign for the Kiwanis Club to build a playground in an impoverished neighborhood of Roanoke. Cheri now works at Carilion Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, establishing an adolescent addiction treatment program called Back on Track.  More recently, Cheri has worked directly with Dr.  David Hartman (her husband of 48 years) to develop Carilion's office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) program and serves as its program manager. This program incorporates addiction treatment best practices for adults struggling with the disease of an opioid use disorder.
