CFMH's John Crocker, R.R. T, Respiratory Services, Has a Servant Attitude

The Merriam-Webster definition of Compassion is sympathetic consciousness of others distress together with a desire to alleviate it.  Based on the definition it is easy to see why Compassion is one of Carilion's values.

This photo of John and a patient was sent to me by a staff member with the caption "John Crocker just being John." That is exactly right!! John Crocker is an amazing person, and based on the definition for Compassion, he is the most compassionate person I have ever met. John Crocker has a servant attitude and could receive a WOW every day he comes to work.  Here is just a glimpse of what John offers to our Carilion family and to our patients every day:

Several years ago, a patient was being discharged and did not have shoes that fit him.  John had an extra pair of shoes in his car, for just in case he had the urge to go fishing. He got them from his car and they fit the patient perfectly.  The patient became very teary eyed and stated; "that was the kindest thing anyone had ever done."  An EVS Retiree still talks about how much she enjoyed working with John.  I noticed him taking the ACS trash out one day, he said "I have to help my friend!"  He was talking about her! His actions continue and recently in huddle a staff member mentioned how great a person John Crocker is. I noticed everyone in huddle was nodding their head. She told the story of a day it was her turn to pass out lunch trays on ACS.  While she was passing out the lunch trays she needed help positioning a patient in bed. John overheard her trying to find someone to assist her with the patient. Without being asked John assisted her with the patient. He then stayed around to talk to the patient until he brought a smile. But it is not just compassion, that John Crocker's behavior stands for! It is for each one of Carilion's 5 values:
