Carilion Employees Plant Two Trees at Piedmont Park during Earth Week

As a part of Earth Week, five Carilion employees participated in a tree planting event at Piedmont Park yesterday evening. In partnership with the City of Roanoke’s Parks and Recreation department, we planted two cherry trees at the park and learned about the work that the City of Roanoke is doing to increase tree canopy coverage to combat urban heat island effect. This was a fun and educational event – a special thanks to Dan Cohen (Education and Organizational Development) for organizing it!  

Earth Week isn’t over yet! There are still ways you can participate:  

• Sustainability Bingo: By April 28th, complete the Earth Day Bingo card! Mark your card when you complete an item. When you have 5 squares covered in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) you’re done! Send a photo of your completed card and a photo of you completing one of the items to mcsotelo@carilionclinic.org to be entered to win a prize! 

• Campus Cleanup: Friday, April 26, 12-1 p.m. (CRMH) or anytime. On Friday, April 26, go outside your office (or home office!) and participate in a Carilion-wide clean up. Grab a trash bag and some gloves (either gardening or medical exam gloves) and walk around the area to pick up any trash you find. Send a picture of your efforts to mcsotelo@carilionclinic.org to be entered into a drawing for a prize! If you cannot participate in the specified time frame, send us a picture of your efforts at any other point during the week to enter!   

Carilion will also be hosting a conference on Climate, Heat and Health on June 22nd. This one-day conference is designed for physicians, nurses, advanced care practitioners, social workers and members of the community who are interested in the impacts of climate change and increasing heat on health.
