Disability Insurance – The Standard
As an employee, you can enroll in short- and long-term disability benefits to replace a portion of your earnings if you are not able to work due to an accident, illness or injury. Knowing you will continue to get paid for a period, even if you're not working, can ease your concerns for the future. It's an affordable choice for peace of mind!

Late Enrollment Penalty
- If you don’t apply for short-term disability coverage within 31 days of becoming eligible, your benefit waiting period for physical disease, pregnancy or mental disorder will be 60 days if you become disabled during the first 12 months after your coverage takes effect. However, if you’re enrolled in the 14-day plan and move to the 30-day plan or are enrolled in the 30-day plan and move to the 14-day plan, your benefit waiting period for physical disease, pregnancy or mental disorder will be 30 days if you become disabled during the first 12 months after your coverage takes effect.
- Long-term disability replaces 60 percent of your eligible earnings, paid to you monthly after you have been out of work for at least 150 days.
- Payments may continue until you are no longer considered disabled, or until Social Security normal retirement age or later depending on your age on the date of disability.
- If your long-term disability insurance ends because you leave Carilion or change to part-time or flex status, you may be eligible to continue your coverage by converting it to an individual policy. Some limits may apply to the amount you can continue through conversion. Contact The Standard at 888-288-1389 for more information about converting your long-term disability coverage.
